How it all began
When Chas and I started Aptible in 2013, a huge amount of startup energy was going into social and mobile apps. In the co-working space where we got started in New York, one of the tenant companies was building an “Instagram for Dogs.” That was the mood in tech at the time.

We thought that not enough effort was being invested in some of the most meaningful problems, and we wanted to build a company where success meant our customers get to have an increasingly positive impact in the world.

It just so happened that the HIPAA Omnibus Rule was about to take effect, and thousands of digital health companies were suddenly going to need to become HIPAA compliant almost overnight. I had been working on platform engineering at Artsy at the time, helping build internal infrastructure similar to Heroku. Chas was working as a regulatory lawyer in government. So between the two of us, we thought we were uniquely positioned to solve the problem of HIPAA compliance for software startups.

From the beginning, the mission was simple: make it easy for great developers to work in healthcare.

Together, we built Aptible to help innovators break through the operational and compliance red tape around healthcare, because we believed the system was broken in ways that technology could genuinely help address. What we learned
Thirteen years later, the original bet has held up: healthcare, financial services, life sciences (industries where engineering teams handle sensitive data under serious regulatory scrutiny) are still the companies Aptible is built for. We've bottled everything we know across HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and GDPR into a product that absorbs compliance complexity, so customers never have to build that infrastructure from scratch.

Where we're going
The shape of software engineering is changing. As AI-assisted development pushes more code into production faster, every engineering team is going to need a platform that absorbs the downstream complexity. That's the next chapter of Aptible's mission: meeting every developer at every company, not just the ones in regulated industries.

How would you describe the Aptible team?

“The Aptible team is incredibly dynamic and talented, always filling in where needed even if the task is outside of their job description. I'm regularly amazed by the speed and quality of the work that gets done every day, and it motivates me to continue to learn and grow alongside them!”

“The Aptible team is the perfect balance of methodical and scrappy. I've seen more significant projects completed in my 6 months here than I have at any of the previous companies I've worked for, and I think that's largely due to the team's tenacity for focusing on the things that matter and being careful to avoid over-engineering the process.”

“Caring, Dedicated, Talented, Nerds”

“Every day is different, and you've got to be open to learning new things and taking on tasks that may be unfamiliar to you. Because everyone moves quickly, you've got to be prepared to do the same and to pave your own way and proactively pursue the ideas and opportunities that will help your team succeed.”

“A successful Aptilian is self-motivated, curious, reliable, and kind. They have opinions, but are eager to hear more about how others are thinking about a problem. They're an expert communicator. They prefer demos over memos. Everyone at Aptible is given a lot of autonomy and latitude, and the ones that thrive are the ones that aren't afraid to wield it.”

“Get-$hit-doners who are comfortable collaborating with a small, remote team and running with the outcomes. Bonus points if you are comfortable giving and receiving direct feedback.”

WHO WE ARE
Aptilians are engineers, security practitioners, designers, marketers, and operators who've chosen to spend their time on a single problem: making it easier to build software where the stakes are highest. The team is small, intentionally so.

WHO YOU ARE
There's no single archetype that thrives at Aptible, but there's a recognizable shape. Aptilians take ownership without being asked. They prefer building over deliberating. They want autonomy and earn it by doing good work.

We don't ask employees to commute to an office (we never will), and we don't try to fake a colocated culture over Zoom.

What works for a remote team isn't pretending you're all in the same room. It's investing in what actually keeps a distributed team productive: written-first communication, clear ownership, and getting everyone together in person several times a year (recent meetups have been in Mexico City, Toronto, New York, and Philadelphia).

Developer-first, always
Developer-first, always
We build for developers, by developers. Every feature starts with understanding the real problems our users face. We obsess over API design, documentation quality, and developer experience because we know that's what matters most.

Security by default
Security by default
Security isn't a feature you opt into; it's the foundation of everything we build. We believe that every team, regardless of size or budget, deserves enterprise-grade security. We make the secure path the easy path.

Transparency builds trust
Transparency builds trust
We're open about what we're building, why we're building it, and what's not working. We share our roadmap, our incidents, and our learnings. Trust is earned through consistent transparency, not marketing copy.
