## Overview

A self-hosted Stack is a [Dedicated Stack](https://www.aptible.com/docs/core-concepts/architecture/stacks.md#dedicated-stacks-isolated) that runs inside an AWS account you provide, instead of Aptible's. Aptible offers two ways to host a Stack:

* **Aptible-hosted**, where Aptible provisions and operates the underlying AWS infrastructure for you. This is the most common method, since it's the fastest and cheapest way to get started on Aptible.
* **Self-hosted**, where that infrastructure runs inside an AWS account you provide instead.

In both cases, Aptible's platform and SRE team handle the same work on the Stack: deploying Apps and Databases, managing TLS and networking, running health checks, and enforcing the same compliance controls. What changes under self-hosted is where the underlying AWS resources live, and to whom the infrastructure fees are paid.

## FAQ

> [accordion] How does billing work on a self-hosted Stack?
>
> You pay AWS directly for the infrastructure (compute, storage, networking) running in your account. You pay Aptible separately for the SaaS subscription that provisions and manages the platform on top of it.
>
> Aptible's fees are based on:
>
> * Plan Base Fee
> * Platform fee per App Service
> * Platform fee per Database
> * Support Fee
>
> This billing structure requires an Enterprise plan/agreement.

> [accordion] Can I use AWS credits or a savings plan with a self-hosted Stack?
>
> Yes. Because the infrastructure runs in your own AWS account, any AWS credits, savings plans, or reserved instances you've already committed to apply directly to that spend.

> [accordion] Is functionality different on a self-hosted Stack?
>
> The feature set is the same, with one addition: self-hosted unlocks integrations that depend on infrastructure living in your own account, including Vanta and Drata for compliance monitoring. The only constraint runs in both directions: Aptible manages the AWS resources it supports within your account, and self-hosting doesn't extend that management to AWS resources it doesn't already support.

> [accordion] Are HIPAA and other compliance frameworks available on self-hosted Stacks?
>
> Yes. Self-hosted Stacks support the same compliance frameworks as Aptible-hosted Stacks, including HIPAA.

> > Your existing BAA with Aptible applies to self-hosted Stacks.

> [accordion] Can I run self-hosted and Aptible-hosted Stacks at the same time?
>
> Yes. Self-hosted and Aptible-hosted Stacks can run side by side on the same account. There's no requirement to move everything at once. Moving a specific app or database from an Aptible-hosted Stack to a self-hosted one requires migrating that resource to the new Stack.

> [accordion] I'm coming from another platform, not from Aptible-hosted. Can I go straight to a self-hosted Stack?
>
> Yes. New customers migrating from another platform can migrate directly into a self-hosted Stack. There's no requirement to start on Aptible-hosted first.

> [accordion] How do I get started?
>
> [Contact us](https://www.aptible.com/contact) to discuss whether a self-hosted Stack fits your setup. Self-hosted is only available on the Enterprise plan. Setup takes about 1-2 weeks to complete.
